HOUSTON – The suspect believed to be responsible for a string of robberies on the northwest and southwest sides of town has been identified and is finally off the streets, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Robert Barton Porter Jr., 58, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held without bond.
Investigators said in the most recent case on Aug. 13, he pointed a gun at a mom in front her kids while demanding cash. It happened as the mother and her children got into the family’s vehicle at a shopping center on Long Point Road in northwest Houston.
Investigators also connected Porter to jewelry store robberies in both Houston and Harris County.
At a Zales outlet store on Hempstead Road and at a jewelry store in West Oaks Mall, pinvestigators said Porter demanded money from the cash registers at gunpoint. He also stole several gold and diamond rings before fleeing.
In several of the crimes, he was seen wearing a camouflage fishing hat or a black baseball cap and a motorcycle glove with the finger tips cut off. The getaway vehicle was described as a light-colored pickup truck.

—Aug. 13 - 11:40 a.m. - (shopping center) 7840 Long Point
