HOUSTON—A clumsy robber actually shot himself while trying to make a getaway, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Kerney Devon Benson-Flowers, 20, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Investigators said Benson-Flowers and another man drove up behind two men sitting in a parked vehicle on May 6, 2011. The suspects jumped out of their Dodge Ram and robbed the victims at gunpoint, then fled.

While the suspects were running back to their truck, the victims heard a gunshot and a man scream. One of the suspects had shot himself, investigators said.

The victims called for help after the suspects were gone.

Authorities collected blood samples and a bullet fragment at the scene.

The DNA evidence was entered into the CODIS system to see if there was a possible match.

On October 11, 2012, the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab identified the CODIS hit as Benson-Flower’s genetic profile.

Charges were filed and his bail was set at $40,000.
