HOUSTON – A Houston grandmother is in jail after allegedly trying to give her grandbaby away.
Witnesses told police that Vernice Ruenell Zagerman brought the 3-year-old to a Shell gas station on Imperial Valley and offered the child to random strangers.
She told them she could no longer care for the child.
Zagerman and the child left in a cab just before police arrived, but officers pulled them over a few blocks away from the station.
They said Zagerman was intoxicated and arrested her on a charge of endangering a child.
The 3-year-old’s mother told police that Zagerman was supposed to be babysitting the child.
The toddler was released back into the mother’s custody.
Records show Zagerman has a criminal record that includes assault, theft and drug charges. She was sent to prison after assaulting a public officer in 2004.
Zagerman remains jailed on a $15,000 bond.
