GALVESTON -- Galveston city officials investigating the Mardi Gras melee are pouring over dozens of videos posted online that show participants hurling bottles and tossing trash cans at one another.

Galveston’s assistant city manager said the images are part of an overall review of the incident that could lead to a greater police presence at next year’s event.

“Certainly you can always have more,” said Brain Maxwell. “But you have to balance that with what's feasible and what's possible.”

Witnesses who were on the Strand when the violence erupted Saturday night said it began when one man threw a fist full of beads at another man.

In response, the man who was hit with the beads threw a bottle.

“It only takes one person to start it,” said Ryan Conner. “One person gets hit with beads and then it escalates from there."
