HOUSTON – After an hour-long standoff with police, a father was taken into custody Saturday night for holding his 4-year-old son captive in a northeast Houston home.

According to the Houston Police Department, police responded to a call of an assault in progress at 10 p.m. at a residence off Jordan Heights near Ida Wells Forest.

When police arrived at the home, a woman was waiting and informed the officers that her ex-husband and father of her son had struck her with the butt of a gun. The mother said she was supposed to have custody and the man took their son inside the home and locked the door.

Police tried to get the man to come out of the home, but he did not respond. Because the man was armed and possibly intoxicated, SWAT was called in to assist with the situation.

After an hour of negotiating with the father, he finally surrendered and was taken into custody, police said.

The 4-year-old was not injured during the incident, police said.
