HOUSTON—A father accused of leaving his 18-month-old baby boy alone in a car at Memorial City mall appeared before a Harris County judge Monday.

Charles Douglas Villegas, 28, was charged with abandoning a child.

Police said that Villegas left his young son alone in a car, with the keys in the ignition, while he went inside the mall on May 10. Police were waiting when Villegas returned to the car and took him into custody. They said the father’s speech was slurred.

The little boy was holding an empty beer can when he was found and his shirt was drenched with beer. Police also found marijuana and Xanax in the car with the unattended child.

Bond for Villegas was denied Monday morning. He was already facing charges for shoplifting from Walmart.
