HOUSTON -- The family of a man fatally stabbed Saturday night at a southwest Houston apartment believes someone needs to be charged in the case.
It happened at the Brookbend Apartments in the 12200 block of Fondren, near West Airport, around 8 p.m.
The victim was 27-year-old Reese Kirkland.
His family says he was simply there to pick up his 5-year-old daughter Joy.
"All he wanted was to see his daughter," said Kirkland's younger brother, Ashton Lyons.
Houston Police said that Kirkland barged into the apartment his ex now shares with a new boyfriend and was stabbed in self-defense.
Leroy Velasquez said Kirkland argued with his ex all the time, but he wouldn't force his way in.
"I heard him screaming and I heard a taser going off," said Velasquez. "She pushed him outside the door and he came like crawling to me and asked me to help him."
Kirkland admitted that things got heated at the door with his ex-girlfriend, but was most upset that his daughter witnessed the whole thing.
Kirkland died on his way to the hospital. The case is being referred to a grand jury to decide if any charges should be filed.
