SPRING BRANCH, Texas — Authorities are searching for the driver who sped away after striking a woman outside a restaurant in Spring Branch early Thursday.

The driver was idling in a parking space in front of the Michoacan restaurant on Wirt and Long Point around 12:45 a.m. His engine was still running when a woman hopped into the vehicle on the driver’s side and started climbing over to the passenger seat. One of the individuals accidentally hit the gas pedal, causing the SUV to lunge forward, authorities said.

A woman who was standing on the sidewalk was struck by the vehicle and pinned against the wall. The SUV driver then backed up and sped away.

The injured woman was transported to Memorial Northwest Hospital in serious condition. She suffered broken legs and a fractured hip.

The driver faces felony charges for fleeing the scene and failing to stop and render aid.
