HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A Houston police officer shot and killed a man while serving a warrant in northern Harris County Wednesday morning, authorities said.
HPD officers were conducting a search warrant, as part of a narcotics investigation, at a home in the 1600 block of Birchwood around 6 a.m. SWAT officers were entering the home when a man inside allegedly pointed a gun at them.
An officer opened fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The officer who fired the fatal shot has been with HPD since 1990 and is assigned to the Tactical Operations Division. He will be on administrative duty for three days, which is standard procedure, while the case is investigated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
“Officers fearing for their safety discharged their weapon at the subject,” said Thomas Gilliland, HCSO. “The home itself is fortified by a large fence, multiple cameras. The reason why the HPD SWAT team was here is the individual is known to have multiple weapons and narcotics on the scene.”
The suspect’s identity has not been released yet, but his sister denies that he was involved in any drug activity and said he worked out of his home because he had bronchitis.
