HOUSTON – A man who committed one of Houston’s most notorious murders is free Thursday night.
David Port left prison Thursday after serving less than half of his 75-year sentence.
Port was arrested in 1984 and convicted of killing mail carrier Deborah Schatz, shooting her in his home during an attempted rape.
At the time of his sentencing, prison overcrowding and state law allowed for his early release.
Port was taken to a halfway house in Austin where he’ll be required to wear an ankle monitor. He was ordered to stay out of Harris County.
