HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Residents near Greenspoint Mall were awakened Saturday morning, first by the sound of arguing and then by the sound of gunshots. When it was over, a young man was dead.
It happened near Southbrook Circle at Debbie in north Harris County.
A detective with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the victim was chased down and killed along the banks of Greens Bayou about 7:20 a.m.
“The male was chased by at least two vehicles through the Cyclone Industries parking lot into the field,” said Sgt. Ben Beall.
There were tire tracks leading from the business through the grass to an area in back of homes along the bayou.
After apparently trying to outrun the cars, the victim — who police describe as a young, tall, thin black male — was beaten.
“His nose was all bloody. Like he’d been in a fight. You could tell he’d been in a fight,” said resident Dennis Climer.
Witnesses also said there were clothes in the grass near the body. Authorities said the man was wearing winter clothing.
“He’s layered up,” said Beall. “You can see where he’s got long johns and pants so he was dressed for the weather.”
Residents said this is the third death in their neighborhood in just a short period of time. One neighbor recently committed suicide. There was an officer-involved shooting of a suspect following a chase and now this homicide.
“I mean the shooting in this day and time is like shooting a wild animal and you know we’re all human beings,” said resident Milda Climer. “It’s bad. It’s awful to see somebody…laying like that back there. I don’t like it.”
Families that have lived in the area for decades said crime seems to get worse every day.
“To be frank with you when they leave the Lord out of their lives, that happens,” said Pastor Truman Howze, a resident of the neighborhood. “He said He’s the way and He’s the only way.”
Now detectives are searching for the why and the who, looking for answers in the latest deadly case to occur in the northwest side neighborhood.
