16-year-old bystander killed in suspect chase with police

HOUSTON—A 16-year-old bystander is dead after a police chase in Baytown Friday night.

Police say around 10:15 p.m., they tried to stop a man and women who were shoplifting inside the Sears at San Jacinto Mall when the suspects took off in their truck.

The suspects allegedly rammed a police car and several officers had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

After a short chase, the driver crashed into two other cars on Garth and Rollingbrook. The 17-year-old driver of one of the cars was flown the hospital in critical conditon. The 16-year-old passenger died on the scene. The two people in the third car were not seriously hurt.

"The suspect, after striking that citizen, got out of his vehicle, along with the female accomplice and ran through this parking lot behind me, where he was captured by officers. The female had to be tazed by officers to affect the arrest," said a member of the Baytown police.

The female suspect was later identified as 35-year-old Jennifer Jenkins. The male suspect has been identified as 43-year-old Shannon Joe Chauncey.

Chauncy has been charged with evading arrest resulting in death and evading arrest resulting in serious bodily injury. Charges of misdeamor evading, theft and possession of a controlled substance are pending against Jenkins.
