HOUSTON—At Sunny’s Food Store on South Post Oak, it was anything but business as usual.
It happened just before closing. Surveillance video shows two men wearing masks burst into the store around 11:15 p.m. One of them pulls a gun and holds an employee at bay, as the other jumps the counter and unplugs the cash register. Together they carry it out, stealing some phone cards and a few packs of cigarettes along the way. The two employees in the store at the time were unharmed.
“This kind of thing happened,” said Mohammad Ali, co-owner of the store. “It could be anywhere.”
It’s a point that resonates with customers.
“We live in some hard times,” said Jarvis Jenkins, who lives just around the corner. “Number one, it just makes it unsafe, cause I stay over there, and if it can happen right here, it can happen right there.”
Anthony Young agreed.
“Everybody needs to be careful and watch what they’re doing,” said Young. “Times are hard, but that’s not an excuse to be robbing anyone.”
The store owners said they’ve been here for three years, and this is the first time they’ve been robbed.
