WILLIS, Texas – An elderly Willis woman is behind bars in Montgomery County for allegedly stealing more than $50,000.
Dorothy Clark Canfield, 83, is accused of taking the money from people who were trying to become legal residents. She promised to help them fill out Department of Homeland security forms, but never did it, according to court documents.
She was caught in an undercover sting after some of the immigrants complained to authorities.
This isn’t Canfield’s first brush with the law.
She went to prison for two years in 2009 on a theft charge. Canfield was also charged with felony theft in Walker County in 1986, but was given probation.
Investigators say she began preying on immigrants shortly after she got out of prison in 2011.
Her bond is set at $500,000.
