HOUSTON—A CPS worker is in the hospital for a second night after being attacked by three people, including the parents of a 1-year-old girl.
Officials said CPS caseworker Stephanie Vera, 23, made an unannounced visit to check on a baby girl after reports she was being medically neglected and abused. Vera knocked on the door at an apartment in the 8000 block of Tidwell around 6 p.m. Tuesday. The child’s mother and father let her inside.
That’s when police say she was attacked and knocked unconscious. At some point, Vera managed to press a button on her cell phone that rang her supervisor who then called police.
Police said upon their arrival they found Vera with bruises on her head and redness around her neck.
Houston police said the parents and a third person are in jail and will be charged with aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping. They include the child’s mother, 19-year-old Karrisa Marie Ferrigno, the father, 21-year-old Troy Davis, and another man, 21-year-old Shane Douglas.
Vera was taken to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital. She’s spending a second night in the hospital for additional testing.
“Stephanie has a heart of gold and our family is very proud of her. She has a 6-year-old son named Jacob and this horrible event occurred on his birthday,” said Vera’s mother Tracey Rios. “The only thing going through her mind was, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to die on my baby’s birthday.’ She is very thankful her supervisor acted quickly and that the police arrived, saved her and arrested the trio.”
Harris County CPS say assaults on caseworkers are rare—maybe one a year; and, despite safety training, it’s clearly a dangerous job.
The child is now in CPS custody.
