HOUSTON – Two people were in serious condition after being hit by a suspected drunk driver Saturday night near Midtown.

According to the Houston Police Department, a man driving a Fiat car was heading west on Tuam Street near Helena Street and struck two pedestrians who were crossing the street at 11:30 p.m.

A male pedestrian was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, while the female pedestrian was taken to Ben Taub Hospital for treatment. Both were listed in serious, but stable condition.

Police said the two pedestrians were walking closely together, which is why the car managed to hit them both at the same time.

The driver of the Fiat tried initially left the scene of the accident, but returned after someone followed him, police said. The driver then tried to leave again, but was detained by witnesses.

Police arrested the driver for driving while intoxicated, as well as fleeing the scene and failing to render aid.
