HOUSTON – A 19-year-old woman was struck by a stray bullet and died early Sunday when someone opened fire at a party in a southwest Houston apartment complex, according to Houston police.

Officers responded to a shooting call at the Oakwood Villa Apartments in the 6200 block of West Bellfort near Bob White around 12:30 a.m. When they arrived, police found Tyre Phillips shot in the head and laying dead in the parking lot.

Homicide investigators said that there was a large party being held at one of the units in the complex, and that an argument had ensued between two groups.

The argument turned into fist fights, which led to several suspects pulling out guns, police said. Several shots were fired, sending party guests running for cover.

The victim was not part of the argument, but was hit by a stray bullet as she tried to flee the scene.

The suspects fled the scene in an unknown vehicle.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
