18-wheeler chase ends with bizarre standoff in NW Houston

KHOU 11's Melissa Correa reports

HOUSTON --  Houston Police and a SWAT team worked to end a bizarre standoff near the Garden Oaks neighborhood early Friday morning.

It started as a chase at about 1:30 a.m. when a man in a "Ho Ho Ho Express" 18-wheeler refused to stop for officers, all while going the wrong direction on some roads. Police say they initially tried to stop the driver because the truck didn't have any lights on.

The man eventually stopped near Pinemont and Ella but allegedly refused to get out of the big rig.

The man reportedly was changing clothes in the truck while officers tried to get him to come out. At one point they say he also displayed a knife.

After about two hours, a SWAT team used gas to force the man out of the rig without further incident. The suspect was then taken into custody.

The truck was towed out of the way, and the roadway fully reopened just before 6 a.m.
