HOUSTON – One person is dead and another is in serious condition after a suspected drunk driver slammed into a car on the side of road in north Houston early Sunday, deputies said.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened around 3:15 a.m. on the North Sam Houston Parkway near Sharmon.
Investigators said a car was heading west Sam Houston Parkway when they had to stop because their hood, which was being held down with rope, popped up. The driver moved over the right side of the road and put his flashers on.
The male driver and a female passenger got out of the car and tried to fix the hood, investigators said. That is when they heard and saw a white pickup coming right at them.
The driver and passenger were able to jump out of the way as the truck slammed into the back of the car, investigators said. However, there were still two females in the back seat of the vehicle.
One the females was ejected from the car and died at the scene, while the other was taken to Houston Northwest Medical Center, investigators said.
The male driver of the pickup was also taken to the hospital. He is in stable condition and was found to be intoxicated.
Investigators said he was charged with intoxication manslaughter.
