CONROE, Texas An officer was in stable condition Saturday following a shooting that left a man dead outside a Conroe bakery.

Police said Sgt. James Kelemen responded to a report around 4:00 p.m. in the 330 block of North Loop 336 east that an armed man was tapping the front door of a Discount Bakery Store with a shotgun.

Upon his arrival, Kelemen confirmed the suspect, later identifed as 54-year-old James Hill, was armed and pointing his gun at him.

Police said it appeared Hill then fired once, striking Kelemen in the face. Several other officers on scene returned fire on Hill, who died at the scene.

Kelemen, a six-year veteran of the Conroe Police Department, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Police said he was later upgraded to stable condition but could lose his right eye.
