SPLENDORA, Texas – One man was killed Tuesday while trying to zip-line across a small Splendora lake.
The victim and other young adults were at the swimming hole at the end of Midline Road. The one-acre lake has a zip-cable running across it, which is attached to trees at both ends.
Kevin Burgess, 23, climbed the trees to get the handles for the cables, which are 30 feet off the ground. As he started off to the other side, the cable malfunctioned. It began to hang, jarring him loose. Burgess then plunged almost head-first to the ground, according to witnesses.
He sustained severe head injuries.
Friends loaded Burgess into the back of an SUV and headed for help. They called EMS when they reached the intersection of Highway 59 at Fostoria. EMS crews arrived at the scene around 4 p.m. and pronounced Burgess dead.
An autopsy will be performed at the Southeast Forensic Center in Conroe.
