HOUSTON – Houston police arrested a woman accused of stealing money from the Shape Center.

The Shape Center has been financially struggling and was on the brink of shutting its doors earlier this year. Then they learned someone was stealing money from them.

Houston police arrested Lisa Chartain, who was convicted and served jail time in the past for forgery.

“She’s a long-time check forger, she’s been convicted at least twice,” said Officer Jeff Hasley, with the Houston Police Department.

Chartain is accused of forging up to 10 checks from the Shape Center, worth more than $5,000.

The charity organization also kept Chartain off the streets by allowing her to complete her community service at the organization. But it didn’t end well.

KHOU 11 News obtained video and pictures of Chartain’s arrest Tuesday morning from investigators.

“I believe very firmly that she is a very sick person because anyone that would steal from a community center. We’re not in a position to have anything stolen from us that equals money. We’re struggling like so many people are,” said Deloyd Parker, the executive director of the Shape Center.

The father of Chartain’s twins says he loved the mother of his children, but she broke his heart and his trust.

“She would take my check book and she would go in the back of the checks and gets checks from the back of the books,” he said.

He said he and his 88-year-old mother were out thousands of dollars.

“When my mother went to pay her bills, all her checks bounced,” he said.

He said he forgives Chartain, but can’t forget.

It’s a feeling that’s all too common at the Shape Center.

“I gave her a chance and I’m not ready to give up on her. I would be a hypocrite if I did. She needs help,” said Parker.
