HOUSTON –- A man was taken into custody overnight after stealing an ambulance and leading Houston officers on a chase into Pearland, police said.

Officers with the Houston Police Department were called to the 6600 block of Scott Street south of downtown around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses told police a man was acting erratically and was in need of help.

An ambulance arrived, and the man somehow managed to get in the driver’s seat and speed away.

Using the vehicle’s GPS, police were able to track down the suspect as he went southbound on Highway 288 in Pearland. The man eventually pulled over.

Police said when the suspect got out of the ambulance, he threw up and was then taken into custody.

The HFD vehicle sustained minor damage in the incident, including two flat tires.
