MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – A Montgomery County business owner was fed up with repeated break-ins, so he was ready when his burglar alarm went off again just after midnight Thursday.
The owner of the Country Peddler grabbed his shotgun and raced to his store. He caught the burglar in the act and called 911 to report he was holding the suspect at gunpoint.
Dispatchers then heard a loud bang, and the caller said, "I shot him."
He later told deputies that he felt threatened.
"I didn’t want to hurt anybody, it was a last resort," he said. "I just want to be left alone."
The suspect was sent to the hospital in critical condition with a shotgun blast to the lower side of his body.
"How many times does it have to happen?" asked the owner, who didn’t want his name used. "I didn’t’ want this for anybody, you know? I didn’t want this for anybody."
The business owner wasn’t arrested and deputies said it looks like self-defense.
"You have a right to protect your property, and protect yourself," said Detective Dan Zientek. "If you feel threatened, and he voiced that he did, and he was certainly here to protect his property."
In an interview with KHOU 11 News, the business owner said he hopes the suspect learns a lesson from the shooting.
“I hope that he takes this opportunity to change his life around and maybe give his soul over to God,” said the owner.
The owner has a message for anyone else thinking about burglarizing his business.
"I might think twice," he said.
The case will be turned over to a grand jury without charges.
