HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A local mom was shaken, but recovering Friday after she and her son hid in a closet during a home invasion that ended with deputies shooting the suspect.
It happened just before 9 a.m. in the 5400 block of Windsor Forest in northwest Harris County.
Investigators said 21-year-old Matthew Paul O’Hara broke into the home and started ransacking the place.
The woman, who was home alone with her 2-year-old son, grabbed the child and her phone, called 911, and hid in a closet.
Deputies said O’Hara found the keys to the woman’s Jeep, loaded it up and tried to leave with the loot.
But officers thwarted those plans.
They arrived at the scene to find O’Hara trying to speed away. Deputies said when O’Hara saw them, he tried to run them down with the vehicle.
Two of the deputies opened fire on the Jeep, hitting O’Hara three times through the front windshield. A tire was also shot out.
Deputies said O’Hara drove about a block away and bailed out of the Jeep, where he ran to his own home.
It didn’t take long for officers to find him there and arrest him.
"This is why he is in jail, because he’s an idiot. He’s not bright, burglarizing a neighbor’s home," said Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia.
O’Hara was taken to the hospital, and investigators said he’s facing multiple charges.
Officers recovered several stolen items from the home in the Jeep.
The mother and her son were not hurt.
George Siller, the victim’s husband, said he rushed home as soon as he got a frantic text from his wife.
"She just texted me to call her back. I just came as fast as I can," Siller said.
Siller said he doesn’t even care what O’Hara was trying to take from his home – the only things he’s concerned about are his wife and son.
