HOUSTON -- A Houston pastor is now at the center of a lingerie controversy as his letter of protest to Victoria’s Secret has been seen by millions.
“Dear Victoria’s Secret," Reverend Evan Dolive wrote.
It starts simply enough. It is definitely not a fan letter.
"I am a father of a 3-year-old girl. She loves princesses, Dora the Explorer, Doc McStuffins and drawing pictures for people," Rev. Dolive continued in the letter.
Last weekend, Dolive posted his letter to Victoria's Secret on his blog expecting some of his dedicated readers to get something out of it. He thought maybe 30 or 40 people.
In the last four days, the letter has gone viral with more than 3.2 million views.
On Tuesday alone there were 1.2 million views. At one moment, people were reading his letter from all the continents on Earth with the exception of Antarctica.
"I've been completely overwhelmed," he said.
In the letter, Rev. Dolive talked about the "Bright Young Things" line that Victoria's Secret introduced for spring break. It includes skimpy underwear -- some with sayings on them.
"Lace trimmed thongs with the words ‘Call Me’ on the front," Rev. Dolive read from his letter. “Green and white polka dot hipsters screen printed with 'Feeling Lucky'"
Controversy came when Victoria’s Secret’s CFO said that 15 and 16 year olds were targets of the marketing, a claim that the company now says was a mistake.
Until he read an article about the underwear controversy, Rev. Dolive didn't know what ‘hipster’ style was.
"Or a cheekster. Didn't know what that was. I looked it up. Now I know," he said.
What Rev. Dolive does know is that his point was not so much about one line of underwear that may or may not be targeted to girls who are too young.
“They are still setting up a standard that is unattainable for beauty and sexuality. That is pervasive not just at Victoria’s Secret, but at other retailers," he said.
In a scope he never imagined, with more than three million views and counting, consider the message sent.
