HOUSTON –- A hot new smartphone is bringing in millions of investment dollars from around the world, but it may never see the light of day.

It's called the Ubuntu Edge, but it’s not just a smartphone. It’s also a computer that you can connect to a regular computer monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Unlike the popular iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy, the Ubuntu Edge was developed by a small group of engineers at a small company in the U.K. It has its own software, but it can dual boot to make use of the Android OS and apps. It works with multiple carriers, it's super fast, and it has twice the RAM of the Samsung Galaxy S4. In short, this phone is widely considered to be far superior to anything out there right now.

But it may never hit the digital store shelves.

A month ago the phone's makers launched a crowdfunding campaign online so people could pre-order and invest in it. Their goal was to raise $32 million, but with less than 24 hours to go early Wednesday morning, they were only at $12 million.

They may be $20 million short, but it’s still a record-setting campaign when it comes to crowdfunding.

The phone itself costs $695, and it was hoped it would come out early in 2014. For now, it looks like that won’t happen. If the company doesn’t hit $32 million at midnight Pacific Time on Wednesday, then the early funders will get their money back, and the process will have to start over.
