Authorities in the New Braunfels area are sounding the alarm and warning residents to be on alert for impostors posing as the real deal on social media.

The New Braunfels Police Department told KENS 5 fake Facebook pages have popped up which appear to pose as authentic agencies and businesses.

Investigators said the Cibolo Police Department, the New Braunfels Professional Firefighter’s Association, the Herald-Zeitung of New Braunfels, the New Braunfels Office of Emergency Management, the Comal County Lost and Found dogs and the NPD  have been targeted.

According to Capt. John McDonald, citizens have been able to spot the false pages. He said the content of the Facebook accounts have been of no consequence.

Still, they want  it stopped.

“The difference in the pages is quite different,” said McDonald. “So, when you see our page it’s a professional page and you’ll be able to see a lot events and stuff that’s been posted by the New Braunfels Police Department.

He said the fake pages are very generic and not attached to a professional or governmental agency.

McDonald said the impostor could be someone who was recently arrested by police seeking an outlet for revenge.

Creating such social media accounts is against the law in Texas.
