GALVESTON, Texas - On Black Friday, a lot of attention is paid to the nation’s big box retailers and shopping malls, but the start of the holiday shopping season is just as — if not more — important for the small businesses in Galveston County.

To that end, local business groups, chambers of commerce and businesses themselves are pulling out all the stops to convince people to “shop local.” Some are sending out reminders, while others have special events planned, and the Texas City-La Marque Chamber is offering shoppers a bus to take them to local retailers.

In downtown Galveston, Black Friday will be followed by a “funky” downtown celebration with a light show, some lasers and some magic on Saturday.
