TEST BAN: Drugmaker Merck is the latest health care company to pledge it will stop using chimpanzees for research. About two dozen companies either have stopped or pledged to not use chimps in the future.

THE IMPETUS: The Humane Society of the United States for seven years has been pushing to end such research. The trend is driven by pressure from the federal government and by improved technology making it rarely necessary to use chimps.

THE SCIENCE: Recent technology allows researchers to do pre-human testing via computer simulations, in bacteria or cells, even in animals as small as fish.
