Black Friday in Houston: Harvey victims using deals to buy essentials

This year, for some shoppers in Houston, Black Friday is about buying home essentials like a stove and a dishwasher, rather than only Christmas gifts.

HOUSTON – This year, for some shoppers in Houston, Black Friday is about buying home essentials like a stove and a dishwasher, rather than only Christmas gifts.

Shoppers lined up six to 10 hours early for Black Friday deals at Best Buy near the Galleria on Thursday. At least one family did so to put their lives back together.

At five o’clock sharp Thanksgiving evening, people waiting to raid Best Buy shelves embraced the managers' 10-second countdown to Black Friday markdowns.

Few smiled more, though, than mom and bride-to-be Adrienne Klein.

“This is the happiest I’ve been in 29 years with my family,” she said.

Just wading into the busiest shopping crowds with her dad Gordon, son Andrew and fiancé Johnny is her dream.

“It keeps me with my family,” Klein said. “It keeps me closer because I almost lost them.”

Hurricane Harvey gutted their home in Dickinson. However, their worst storm came before when their family grew apart.

Klein’s fiancé even moved to Iowa.

Then, three-and-a-half feet of floodwater stranded Klein’s mom, dad and son on the second floor of the family’s home.

Rescue boats sent by Adrienne saved them. Ever since, the family does more together.

“I was separated and I didn’t know what to do and thought I was about to lose my family and Black Friday here just now brought me and my dad closer,” she said. “Just everybody here, this is the best thing I could ask for in the last 29 years of my life cause it brought us all closer. I’m going to tear (up).”

So as others raced inside the store snatching speakers and headphones, the Kleins scooped up a microwave, stove and dishwasher instead.

They also bought an Xbox and televisions for Adrienne’s seven-year-old. She called it her happiest holiday ever.

“Just having a house back and (to) see my son happy for Christmas, (to) see my dad and my mom and my husband, I’m just happy to have them here,” Klein said. “That’s what I’m really happy about.”
