GALVESTON, Texas—The thick fog put a damper on the morning commute for many on Monday, but for some, it put a damper on their vacation.

Specifically, the fog plagued the folks on the Royal Caribbean Voyager of the Seas, who were still waiting to set sail in Galveston after soupy skies initially stranded them on Sunday.

Terry Guidry is one of those vacationers. She spoke with 11 News from her stateroom.

"We got up, went upstairs (Sunday) and in the 10 minutes time it took for us to leave our room and go upstairs, what was it. It was like whiteout," she said.

Now, a day later, they were still waiting.

The cruise line told them the fog would lift by 10 a.m. and they’d be on their way by 10:30, but it just kept getting worse.

"If this had not happened to me last year, you know, if this hadn’t happened to me last year, yeah, I’d probably be high-stress," Guidry said.

She was stranded by fog on a different cruise a year ago.

"And I said don’t be pessimistic. Be optimistic. Don’t talk like that. We’re gonna get out. And I’m really thinking that happened last year. It’s not gonna happen this year. And … here we are!" Guidry said.

As of 5 p.m., a Carnival cruise ship that was also stranded by fog had left Galveston, but Guidry's Royal Caribbean ship was still stuck in Texas.

Officials said it would probably be Tuesday before the Voyager of the Seas could set sail and the passengers' vacation to Mexico could begin.

A dense fog will close the ship channel as fast as an oil spill. The bad part is one can never predict when the fog will lift. Fact is - I have seen the channel closed for days at at time. Wonder if Carnival will give the passengers a free "fog check"?

My husband and I were on a ship 19 years ago for our 1 yr. anniversary. Left out of Freeport for a 7 hour gambling spree. Ended up being stranded for 3 days due to fog. People missed weddings, didn't have medications, no clothes, toothbrushes etc... We pulled in chairs from the icy decks and took curtains off the windows to use to cover up with. Almost didn't make it back for Christmas. Ended up being an experience we will never forget.
