SUNNYSIDE, Texas —Two teenagers caught in the middle of a melee posted on the internet are telling their side of the story, days after the violent images sparked outrage among local ministers and police in Houston’s Sunnyside community.

“They’re trying to make it seem like we were jumping on a mother and a daughter, but it was more of them jumping on us,” said Jamycia Mitchelle.
Mitchelle lives near the Kings Row Apartments, where a dispute over a cell phone touched off a huge brawl last week.
The melee, which involved dozens of people, became an instant hit on Youtube. The video shows a mother and daughter being pummeled by an angry mob, but it also shows the daughter spraying what looks like mace at the crowd. Later, the mother is seen on video swinging what appears to be a knife.
Kendra Smith said she was one of two people stabbed in the fight.
“The doctors told me if it went in any further, it would have punctured my lungs and I could have been paralyzed,” said Smith.
So far, police have not made any arrests and no one has been charged with a crime.
“I just want to make sure people don’t think we’re the bad ones here,” said Smith. “There’s always more than one side to every story.”
