HOUSTON—The case against two street preachers accused of violating city ordinances last month was dismissed during a hearing at Houston Municipal Court Friday afternoon.
The preachers, who promote an anti-gay message, had been cited last month for displaying illegal signs and playing an illegal instrument.
“Grateful that we got the victory today,” said David Stokes, one of the men who delivers sermons on the side of the road. “Our goal is just to come out and be able to preach the gospel in Houston.”
Stokes was joined by fellow preacher David Allen, who also applauded the court’s decision.
“This isn’t about hate,” said Allen. “We’re just trying to rescue people.”
The charges against the men stemmed from an altercation with police that was captured on home video. Officers handcuffed the men and temporarily seized their signs.
“We’ve been preaching in Montrose for two years and expect to be there for another 10,” Stokes said.
But some locals, in what has historically been the heart of Houston’s gay community, don’t want the men to return.
“If this isn’t about hate, why do they come here,” asked one passers-by who asked not to be identified.
A municipal courts spokesperson said the case was dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
Both Stokes and Allen hope to bring their controversial message back to the streets within days.
