LEAGUE CITY, Texas — A Kemah man who was on the county’s most wanted list on a charge of raping a 15-year-old girl was arrested early Thursday morning after police said he led them on a brief foot chase as officers responded to an accident, League City police said.

Police spokesman Lt. Bruce Whitten said officers were investigating a one-car accident in the 1700 block of FM 646 about midnight. A woman at the scene said she was there to help her boyfriend, who wasn’t there, pull his truck out of a grassy area on the side of the road.

Whitten said the officers decided to pull into a concealed area to keep an eye on the woman and the truck. While keeping tabs on the incident, police said they saw a man walk up to the stuck truck but that when the man saw police, he took off running.

Officers gave chase and caught him a few minutes later.

Abraham Martinez Herrera, 22, was wanted in connection to an October rape of a 15-year-old girl after a party in Bacliff, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said. Deputies made several attempts to arrest Herrera but were unable to find him, Tuttoilmondo said.

In fact, Herrera was placed on the county’s Ten Most Wanted list Wednesday.

Herrera was charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child and had the charge of evading arrest added after Thursday morning’s chase, police said. He was jailed on bonds totaling $41,500.
