HOUSTON—One of Houston’s best-known sporting figures, racing legend A.J. Foyt, was recovering Tuesday after a heart procedure at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital. Doctors placed a stent in his main coronary artery on March 25.
"He was a ticking timebomb," said Dr. Reynolds Delgado.
Foyt may have the heart of a champion, but he was suffering from a 90-percent blockage.
" I do have a lot more breathing capacity," said Foyt.
He’s thanking his doctors, but he’s also thanking his wife, Lucy.
"If it wasn’t for her having the problems, I’m quite sure I might not be talking to you today, according to the doc," said Foyt.
He was alerted to his own health issues when he brought his wife in for a heart procedure. He just happened to casually mention to the doctors his personal heart history.
"He just said, by the way, I had stents put in 11 years, haven’t had any good follow up since then and could something be wrong," said Dr. Delgado. Something was very wrong.
So now, Foyt and his wife are both thanking their doctor and preaching the virtues of paying close attention to the heart.
