HOUSTON – Houston police have identified the person who was found dead last Friday inside Brays Bayou in southeast Houston.

Investigators said Ridwan Ayoola Ajala, 18, was attempting to get away when he crashed a stolen van into the bayou at 4200 South MacGregor on June 24.

Authorities said the van that Ajala was driving was stolen outside some University of Houston apartments less than a mile away from Brays Bayou. Police said Ajala apparently crashed into a barricade there first before hitting the one at the bayou.

“To my understanding, no one was chasing him when he went over the side,” HPD Lt. Larry Crowson said. “He refused any help from firefighters, jumped into the water, and started swimming away and went under water.”

Ajala did not resurface after he went into the water.

On June 27, the crew of a train passing over Brays Bayou said they observed what appeared to be a body in the water and called police.  Officers arrived and found the body on the north side of the bayou.
