HOUSTON – Two people were killed and three others injured Friday after a chain reaction wreck.
It happened at about 7:15 p.m. in the 10600 block of Airline Drive near West Hambrick Road.
Deputies say that a driver in a silver Chevrolet C1500 was driving north in the left lane when he hit two pedestrians, Shelly Ralston Smith and Misty Lynn Pearson, who were walking across the road, not at a crosswalk, and entering the center turn lane.
Smith was still on the front of the vehicle when the driver entered the left southbound lane of traffic and hit a maroon Toyota Tundra head-on, according to authorities.
Smith and the passenger of the Tundra were pronounced dead at the scene.
A grieving woman who came to the scene said her two friends were the ones walking down the road. She blamed bad drivers for the fatal wreck.
"It’s wild, it’s Friday night and its Airline and people don’t know how to drive down Airline on a regular day," said Jordan Lewis, the victim’s friend. "People do have loved ones that don’t have cars, and they try to walk to get to where they need to go, watch what you’re doing."
There was no word on the condition of the three people who were taken to the hospital.
The crash remains under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Division.
