HOUSTON— As charges were pending against a suspected drunk driver who police said caused a crash that sent her four children to the hospital, neighbors expressed shock.
It happened in the early morning hours Sunday at the intersection of Fry Road and the Interstate-10 feeder in west Houston.
Authorities said 22-year-old Lourdes Lopez was driving north on Fry and ran the light. That’s when her Jeep SUV was t-boned by an eastbound pickup truck.
She, her 45-year old husband Jorge Lopez Junior, and their four boys, ranging in age from one to 12 years old, were all rushed to the hospital. Police said the oldest child was ejected from the vehicle.
At last check, at least three of the children were in critical condition and their father was still in the ICU Monday.
Authorities said no one from the pickup truck was hurt.
Neighbor Michael Casey said he’s known the family since they moved in just a few years ago.
“I know they were very loving parents, their kids were out playing all the time, he did all the landscaping to his yard,” Casey said.
Elesio Okafor said her husband visited Lopez in the hospital.
“She was in stable condition, she was complaining about back pain and just minor aches and stuff,” she said. “I don’t think she’s aware of the magnitude of what’s going on yet.”
Police said tests confirmed Lopez was intoxicated. It remained unclear precisely what charges she would face.
