HOUSTON—Manatees are finding their way to Texas, according to the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
Manatees are large, slow‐moving, gray marine mammals with a large flat, paddle‐shaped tail.
A West Indian Manatee was spotted Friday in Galveston and others have been seen around Tiki Island and Corpus Christi in the past few months.
The number of sightings in this area has increased considerably over the past years.
It’s not clear why they’re coming here. The water is often too cold for them to survive and rescue groups have been relocating them back to the coast of Florida where they normally live.
Manatees are endangered and TMMSN encourages people to continue reporting any sightings by calling 1‐800‐9‐MAMMAL.
