HOUSTON—A daring robber armed with a sledge hammer tried to hit up not one, but two, gas stations in a matter of minutes, police said.

The man walked into Gibby’s Food Mart located on the 3800 block of Synott around 3 p.m. Wednesday and demanded cigarettes.

The store clerk said he has seen the man before and told him to get out.

“He comes back again with a big hammer,” he said. “So we tried to stop him,” said Roy Razak.

Razak was hit in the forehead and lip. But seconds after that happened, Mike James, who owns a repair shop nearby, jumped in to save Razak.

“You do what you have to do at that moment,” he said. “I didn’t do anything anybody else wouldn’t do at that moment,” said James.

Police arrested the suspect shortly after that. But before the Gibby’s Food Mart attempted robbery, police said the same suspect tried to rob the Phillip’s 66 Gas Station located up the block.

“He grabbed the beer bottle, 40 oz, he tried to come inside, but I locked the door from the inside,” said Lokendra Baniya.

Everyone was OK, but very shaken up.

Police have not released the suspect’s name or charges.
