CLEVELAND, Texas – An 18-month-old girl drowned in a backyard pond in Cleveland Tuesday morning.
The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene around 9:30 a.m.
When deputies arrived, they found the little girl unresponsive.
They performed CPR until an ambulance arrived, and the child was rushed to a hospital in Cleveland, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators said there were several children out by the pond when the girl went under, and there were adults present to watch the kids.
The girl was reportedly in the water for about two minutes before she was discovered.
Many residents in the area have ponds in their yards, which are sometimes used as drinking water for livestock, and other times just as a place for kids to cool off.
Deputies warned parents that it only takes a second for a swim to turn tragic.
"You can’t take your eyes off of them for a second. Even if you get a phone call or a text message, you can’t take your eyes off them," LCSO Capt. Rex Evans said.
Neighbors said the family had lived there for about a year.
"I’ve babysat her and her siblings several times. They’ve been our neighbors for the past year now," Christian Winzenreid said. "Even with adult supervision, kids are quick."
Deputies did not release the victim’s name.
