HOUSTON – A 25-year-old former Lakewood Church volunteer is wanted for indecency with a child.
Investigators issued a warrant for Alvaro Daniel Guzman on Tuesday.
According to court documents, Guzman was volunteering with the Champion Club Program, which is part of Lakewood’s Kids Life Ministry, when he allegedly fondled an 8-year-old autistic boy in February of 2010 during a Saturday night service.
The Champions Club is a daily program for special-needs children.
A fellow volunteer told police the kids participating in the program are rotated between three rooms throughout the day, depending on what kind of care they’re in need of at the time.
The volunteer said Guzman groped the victim while they were in the Jeep Room, which has a vibro tunnel with lights and music in it.
The volunteer told police that Guzman fondled the boy as he put him into the tunnel and again when the boy exited.
She said she told a supervisor about the activity, but Guzman would quit whenever the supervisor came into the room.
When police interviewed Guzman, he denied the allegations against him.
According to court documents, Guzman submitted to a portion of a polygraph test, but when those results came back inconclusive, he refused to submit to the rest of the test.
The victim could not be interviewed, because he is non-verbal, police said.
Lakewood Church said they conducted a full criminal background check on Guzman before he was allowed to volunteer, and that it showed nothing more than a few traffic tickets.
But as soon as the allegations surfaced, church officials removed Guzman from the children and notified CPS.
Guzman was still at large Thursday.
