LA PORTE, Texas – A La Porte High School teacher and coach was arrested Wednesday, accused of having an improper relationship with a student.
Kevin Wheeler, 31, who—according to the school’s website—teaches math and coaches boys basketball and girls softball at La Porte High, is charged with two counts of improper relationship between educator and student.
Police said the alleged offense occurred during the 2011-2012 school year.
The Pasadena man was being held on $100,000 bond.
In a statement released Wednesday afternoon by La Porte ISD, district officials said they acted immediately after learning about the allegations on May 16.
“Based on allegations regarding the sexual impropriety of a La Porte High School teacher with a 17-year-old female student, the district immediately notified the La Porte Police Department, and the teacher was placed on leave on May 16. Also that day, the district reported its findings to the State Board for Educator Certification for possible action against the teacher’s credentials. The teacher was terminated from the district at the June 12 Board of Trustees meeting,” the district’s statement read.
The father of La Porte High School softball player who asked not to be identified said he is really surprised to hear the allegations.
“(He) coached my oldest daughter out there for the last two years, great guy, I’m really shocked,” he said. “She’s kinda, she’s not saying much right now—that’s Coach Wheeler to her, you know? –So she doesn’t know what to say.”
