CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say that 500 pounds of marijuana are off the street thanks to a delivery mix up and a honest businessman.
Miguel Garcia, 35, loves cars, and the only thing he's ever wanted to do was fix them.
"Well we had to ask for a lot of loans. We’re actually in debt, but were moving slowly," he said.
A year ago he and his sister opened Boom Boom Car and Audio on North Tryon Street.
"This is actually my third shot at it. Hopefully it does work out."
You may not have heard about his business, but someone in California has and Tuesday they shipped a big package to the shop.
Miguel thought it must be Christmas in May, because he had not ordered anything.
"The description said chrome accessories and dash kits and that's basically what we sell. So my first thought was maybe a vendor had sent it to me to resell it," said the owner.
He started to open the package and noticed the wrapping inside the box was unusual and then he found marijuana, some 500 pounds of it. His sister immediately called police.
"We never had that thought in our head to keep it. It's one of those things, you have to have do the right thing," he said.
It took officers about an hour to stack up the pot and haul it away. Police list the value at $250,000.
"Wow, that's a lot of money and I could have used it, but it wasn't mine."
Police think the shipper never intended that the package be delivered; the instructions left a phone number.
Officers say the delivery company called it and didn't get an answer. The package was delivered and is now in the hands of the police.
