LAPLACE, La. -- Two people died in a car crash Monday morning in St. Charles Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

The two-vehicle accident happened around 5:30 a.m. on I-10 near mile marker 214.

Nechole Thomas, a 26-year-old Houston resident, was driving "at a high rate of speed" on I-10 westbound when she hit the rear of a vehicle stopped on the shoulder, according to state police. Both vehicles caught on fire.

Thomas was able to escape the accident with minor injuries, but the two people in the stopped car -- a 2012 Nissan Altima -- were found dead inside of the vehicle.

It wasn't until 6:20 a.m. that the fire was extinguished.

State police say "impairment is suspected for Thomas" and tests are pending. Thomas faces two counts of vehicular homicide, DWI and reckless operation. She is being held in the St. Charles Parish Correction Center.

The identity of the victims haven't been released.
