High school football players' TAKS tests allegedly filled out for them

DALLAS - News 8 has learned an internal investigation into allegations of TAKS-test cheating at a high school is in progress at the Dallas Independent School District.

Sources told News 8 the cheating allegations involve senior football players in at least one classroom in which the TAKS tests were filled out for them.

If true, it would constitute a major violation of testing rules, which is why DISD's Office of Professional Responsibility has been assigned to investigate.

The incident allegedly took place in late October at Pinkston High School in West Dallas.

Sources said the football players in question were taking a retest of the math TAKS test, which is required of all seniors to graduate.

In at least one testing class, sources said, the TAKS test was administered by one of the assistant coaches of the Pinkston Varsity Football Team.

Sources said seven football players in the class were all quietly told to leave their tests blank and that the tests would be filled out later and the players would be awarded passing grades.

The alleged scheme fell apart when one of the football player's test was never filled out. News 8 has confirmed that student missed all of the answers and scored a zero on his test. When it came to the attention of the student and his family, they reported the incident to campus officials.

After the allegations arose, the coach who allegedly administered the test called the Alliance of Dallas Educators to seek assistance.

"Based upon his conversation and his tone that he wanted to talk about issues that were bothering him and disturbing him," said Jeff Sherels, Alliance AFT.

District officials said the allegations were brought to their attention last week and school principal Norma Villegas is cooperating with the investigation.

DISD officials said the principal notified them a few days ago and that the investigation is already under way and could have criminal implications.

"Something like this would seem to be very obvious and something that we would be able to find out fairly quickly, not only by just looking at and interviewing some of the students that may have had knowledge of this but by talking with TEA, getting them involved," said Jon Dahlander, DISD Communications Director. I have a feeling that more of this goes on then people might think. It is fairly obvious when you have a football player who is stellar on the field but can only get a scholarship to a junior college that something is amiss.

rukidden, you're right! GOTTA keep those players on the team! Sickening, to me, how much more importance is placed on sports than on academics. This story should be a lesson to coaches everywhere: if you're gonna cheat, you better make sure nobody involved misses out on the promised results! Sounds like this boy AND HIS PARENTS knew AND ACCEPTED/ACQUIESCED in the cheating, till it didn't pan out for their little darling, and then they got all up in arms about it. If this kid's test had been filled out too, this would likely not have been brought to light. Disgusting codes of ethics!

You know these dang TAKS are a waste of our tax dollars! I see that everyone can post on Tiger's issues and so on and so forth but on this they steer clear.. It is NOT only athletes that cheat .. it is only the athletes makes the news... Go figure! Again TAKS are a waste of time! and our tax dollars! No child left behind act is leaving several behind! They are being held back, and kids quitting due to these test ..

I dont like these tests either. I always get the feeling that the teachers have to teach so that the children can pass the test. They dont teach the way they used to. If it is not on the test when it come to testing time, they dont learn about it. It is sad that the kids cant just take final exams like we used to and average the grades.

If the kids would pay attention in class, they would learn the subject matter, and the teachers wouldn't have to spend time trying to teach them how to pass the tests. This situation with the athletes is typical. But the sports programs are cut a lot of slack because they bring so much money into the schools. This MUST stop.
