HOUSTON—Charges against a man accused of beating his 5-month-old daughter to death were upgraded to capital murder Monday.

Investigators say Iniubong Ebong, 31, fatally struck Indya Ebong Friday when she wouldn’t stop crying.

An autopsy later determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the abdomen.

According to godmother Alisha Hahn, Indya’s mother left her child with the father while she worked a double shift on Black Friday.

Hahn said the frantic mom called Friday night after she found her baby unresponsive.

"And I was like, ‘Hello,’ and she said, ‘My baby is not breathing. Indya is not breathing.’ And she dropped the phone," Hahn said.

Authorities believe Indya had been dead for several hours when her mother found her. They said Iniubong Ebong didn’t live with his daughter, but babysat for her sometimes.

CPS said the family had no history of trouble at the home.

Ebong, who was initially charged only with injury to a child, was being held in the Harris County Jail Monday.

Meanwhile, Indya’s mother was in Louisiana, making funeral arrangements.
