HOUSTON—An 11-year-old boy was shot and killed at apartment complex in west Houston Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Witnesses said the boy and four young friends were playing with a gun in the parking lot in the 2000 block of Laverne when it accidentally went off.

The bullet ricocheted off the apartment building and went through Alex Tremain Whitfield's arm and into his body.

A nurse at the scene performed CPR, but it was too late. Alex was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

The young witnesses were taken to the police department to be interviewed.

One of them called his mom first and told her what happened so she rushed to the scene.

"I don’t remember stopping at any red lights. All the red lights seemed to be green and I had my emergency flashers on and I got here as fast as I could because my son was so upset on the phone," said Donna Brumfield. "My son is not doing good at all. He’s very upset. H saw it happen and he’ll never get over it."

Police say the kids found the gun in the closet of an apartment where one of the children lives with her uncle. They were looking for money to buy food when they found the handgun.

The juvenile who fired the deadly shot was questioned and released. The case will be referred to a grand jury without charges.
