PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y.—Two mentally disabled New York newlyweds and their parents are waging a court fight that could have wide-ranging implications.
Hava Samuels and Paul Forziano say the group homes where they live on Long Island are blocking their request to live together as husband and wife.
One group home says it can’t accommodate married couples. The lawsuit says the other group home doesn’t think the new bride has the mental capacity to consent to having sex. But that home isn’t commenting, citing the pending legal case.
Advocates say the issue of accommodating married mentally disabled couples is likely to become more prevalent in the coming years.
